Lesson 1

Lesson 1 is a very important overview of the skills required to truly call yourself an intermediate level guitarist -- and an overview of the skills I'll teach throughout the 12 weeks of this free online guitar course. As you watch this video lesson, take mental notes on the things you know, and the things you don't know or need additional work on -- and then prepare to improve on both!

Be sure to find the link to the remaining 11 weeks of lessons and the free book at the bottom of this page!

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

Right from the start, I want to make sure you fully understand and are completely capable of playing full five- and six-string barre chords. Many players cheat these (as in, they play mostly power chords instead of full barre chords.) You shouldn't be among the cheaters -- buckle down and play barre chords the right way.

I'll show you how with this video lesson, and I've included some useful exercises to help you master these somewhat tricky chord shapes.

There are many important reasons you must become capable of playing the full chords, which I'll explain in the video. Suffice it to say, you'll never become an advanced level player if you're cheating these.

Even if you've already got this skill mastered, there are some extremely important concepts in this video guitar lesson I need you to understand, as they will come into play in later, more advanced lessons.

I realize you may not be sure how to read guitar tab (short for "tablature").

Lesson 3

Now I'm going to show you one of the most common "extensions" of barre chord use. There are a million songs which use this technique -- in rock, blues, and country -- so you'll have to master the skills taught in this video lesson!

Lesson 4

Remember the three required skills I talked about in the intro video: barre chords, CAGED chords, and single note playing? We've covered some essential barre chord lessons this week, and we'll get into CAGED chords more in the weeks ahead. So with Lesson 4 we'll dig into single note playing with one of the most common and useful patterns of all: The pentatonic scale.

There are actually five different pentatonic scale patterns you must learn on the guitar. For this lesson we'll focus on the most widely known, a pattern I refer to as the "main" pentatonic guitar scale.

In this lesson I'll show you the pattern, play you some examples of the kinds of things typically done in this pattern, then show you some essential exercises to move you toward mastery of the main pentatonic guitar scale pattern!

OK, so maybe you already know the pattern and are using it. You'll still learn important stuff from this video lesson and in the many weeks of lessons ahead.

Just watch the video!

Lesson 5

I can't help but throw in a few basic fretboard guitar finger exercises. I'm a huge advocate of keeping a steady regimen of guitar finger exercises going, throughout your guitar playing life. I've been doing these for decades, and I largely owe my finger dexterity to these and the dozens of other guitar finger exercises I've used over the years.

I've even written a book on guitar finger exercises like these, which I sometimes give away for free... watch for more on that in the weeks ahead.

Anyway, get used to doing these guitar finger exercises for at least a few minutes every day and your playing will soar!

OK, a lot of what I've shown you in this first week of the Intermediate level course may seem pretty basic -- maybe even too easy for you. But everything I've shown you up to now serves as a sort of basis for much of what I'll show you over the next 11 weeks of this free online guitar course, so I need you to know this stuff or you may not understand the more advanced skills I'll teach you in the weeks ahead.

Believe me: I'm going to kick it up a notch every week, and I need you to have these basic skills mastered. Don't forget to bookmark this page so you can review these lessons tomorrow -- and all week long!

By the end of this course I'll have you playing all five of the pentatonic scale patterns so you can solo fluently all over the neck of the guitar. I'll also have you playing and understanding chord voicings you've probably never even attempted before, and will have shown you how they are put together in some of the coolest chord progressions you've ever seen (but I know you've heard plenty of times before).

I'm also going to teach you the seven must-know solo techniques, B.B's box soloing, chord scales, riff based songs, essential arpeggio skills, and so much more I can't even list it all here!

Oh, and did I mention that there is absolutely no charge
